A tripod is a good investment. These are just a few brands worth considering:
Benro: http://www.benro.com/main/
Slik: http://www.slik.com
Manfrotto: http://www.manfrotto.com
A tripod is "fit" to its users. If your father is 6 feet tall and the stand extends to just over 5 feet, then quickly tired, bend over with him to use it. Or are you extending the center column, which is rarely a good idea.
The tripod must of course be in a position to the weight of the camera and lens, and be strong enough to withstand the slight breeze causes the movement. Carbon fiber is the best material to minimize vibration and reduce the weight of the tripod, but more expensive. Some manufacturers offer a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber, which is cheaper and always in a position to minimize vibration.
Another aspect is the head. A tripod head is a spherical or 3 titl / pan head. Since a large part of my landscape photography to an inclination of 3-way bet / Pan head, but a degreell head has its advantages.
Happy shopping.
I do not know much about brands, but be sure to cover some basics.
1) You want a very sturdy tripod to avoid camera shake, have the camera, but also because the tripod is your precious art father, so make sure your tripod to keep your 50D with its goal of more serious grip . The last thing we want is the tripod to the preference for being overweight. If possible, choose a with a hook, where you can add more weight to more stability, photographers tend to hang your bag from the camera to the tripod.
2) Depending on the preferences of shooting his father, the weight can be a problem. For large distances of landscape photography in the fresh air, the lighter the better.
Unfortunately, a lightweight but strong tripod can quickly become very expensive, but the selection of the best you can afford. You will not regret it and stand really are, especially the long-term investment.
